Everyone arriving at our borders deserves dignity and respect. However, it’s clear immigration authorities are more interested in jailing migrants than in caring for them. DHS’s detention machine will do nothing to improve conditions for those under their watch. That’s why we need your help. We have till TONIGHT to call our Representatives in Congress and demand they vote YES on 2 Amendments put forward by @ocasio2018 to the National Defense Authorization Act which would ban troops from getting involved in border security & prevent the Dept. of Defense from warehousing people seeking home & safety in the U.S.
Take action NOW! Call ☎️(202) 224-3121

This week we had the honor of hosting “gatHERing Courage,” a panel discussion about the female immigrant and refugee experience. Panelists from local San Antonio organizations and other community members spoke about their personal experiences, professional perspectives and community action in regards to being a female immigrant or refugee and navigating the immigration process. Thank you to all who came out to join us! 💚

This week, alongside @aclutx and Annunciation House, RAICES met with @ocasio2018 & @repayannapressley in El Paso after their visit through the detention centers, where they saw firsthand the atrocities we hear everyday: The "hieleras y perreras", the constant abuse, the lack of medical assistance...etc.
Now we’re calling for more members of Congress to visit these facilities and demand full access to them before they give another dime to CBP and ICE. That’s why we created a tool you can use to email them and demand they do something about this.

Alejandro and Cortiza were detained for two months inside the Dilley Detention Camp in south Texas.
They left Honduras because of crime and violence. Cortiza’s father was killed in front of her 8 years ago. The person who killed him only went to jail for 24 hours and was released. Her mother remarried and a year later, her husband was killed.
After the death of Cortiza’s step-father, Alejandro started seeing a psychologist. He was also aware of the threats that were made to Cortiza and her family and was scared. Scared that they’d kill his mother too.
Alejandro and Cortiza made the journey here out of desperation. They came here fleeing violence in their home country and were met with another hostile environment. A detention camp is NO PLACE for a child. Being detained made Alejandro anxious. He didn’t eat or sleep for days. He was traumatized.
This photo of them was taken 3 years ago. Let that sink in. Nothing has changed. We must do better. We must get #JusticeForOurChildren

We will not be sharing the graphic image published by @apnews of Óscar Alberto Martinez Ramírez and his 23-month old daughter, Valeria who drowned trying to cross the Rio Grande on Monday. Instead we are sharing this photo that was given to media outlets by the family. No less heartbreaking, this photo depicts the family’s truth.
The media wants you to view them as just another tragedy, more #’s to rack up migrant deaths. They will show you the graphic image saying it will make people “care” or “move them into action.” We think otherwise.
Were they migrants? Yes. But before they were migrants they were a family. A normal family who wanted the best for their children and risked it all in search of refuge and a better life. Here. Today we honor that family and pay homage to the countless others who have made the dangerous journey here.
We want to make this very clear: Restrictions like “Remain in Mexico” and the “Metering” policy which rejects asylum seekers who come to ports of entry asking for protection are what caused these deaths and the countless others that occur on the border every day. We can no longer stand by as this administration continues to build walls. It’s time we build bridges into our society, so that ALL members are afforded their rights and treated with dignity. #BuildABridge
